WHAT’S on TAP?
Not only is there a river flowing through the Columbia River Gorge, you will also find beer pouring everywhere and it is serious business. Local brew masters are very passionate about the process and their commitment to making quality beer. It has been said that there are more craft breweries and pubs combined with waterfalls per capita in the Columbia River Gorge than anywhere else in the United States. In February 2015, a group of local breweries united in promoting their craft beer by forming Breweries in the Gorge to help you discover some of the nation’s finest beer in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Plan to visit some of the craft breweries in the Columbia River Gorge on your next visit and explore what’s on tap!
Hops
— Humulus Lupulus —
Hops are a perennial plant of the Cannabacea family that also includes the genus cannabis. Hops consist of lupulin, a sticky substance that is secreted when boiled, which contributes to the bitterness that counterbalances the sweetness of the barley. It also adds flavor and aroma along with helping to preserve beer.
Many ask, what is IBU? IBU stands for International Bitterness Unit which measures the bitterness in a beer. NOTE: Bitterness is also affected by its malts, so high IBUs in a stout may not be as bitter due to the sweet malts.
What is ABV? Alcohol by Volume. It is usually listed as a percentage anywhere from 4.7% to sometimes 9%. The yeast content transfers the sugar into alcohol.
